NGIS was first required to develop a comprehensive habitat map for the entire Hong Kong region. Landsat TM imagery was merged with SPOT PAN data prior to classification and aerial photography and existing digital datasets were interpreted to provide additional data and to improve the accuracy of the classification. NGIS was responsible for directing the collection and collation of field data. Nine types of vegetation were classified, in both natural and regrowth state with 90% accuracy.
NGIS then developed a model to assist the Planning Department of the Hong Kong Government to assess the sustainability of new developments in the region. The model, developed using Visual Basic, links through to data held in an Oracle database and in the GIS. Extensive and complex database design was required as part of this project. The application has been implemented throughout the government. The project was delivered to budget and on time.
