NGIS' role was two-fold:
- Assessing the extent in which China utilised remote sensing and GIS techniques to monitor land degradation and rehabilitation programs, and the capacity to increase this use.
- Prepare a preliminary design of a more comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system, based on a nationwide network of monitoring stations and simple monitoring techniques, combined with national level remote sensing and geographic information systems.
Services provided:
- Assessment of current GIS and remote-sensing capacity.
- Design of monitoring and evaluation system.
- Advice on data management and database development.
- Write software specifications.
- Development of training programs.
- Develop priorities, timeframes and work plans for further development.
