Sustainable Spatial Systems

Join NGIS Australia in a topical discussion on the impact of climate change on industry and the role of spatial technology and the internet in the long term management of Australia's natural resources.

Dr. Ray Wills, Chair of the WA Sustainable Energy Association and Manager Sustainability Services for SMEC, will share his insights into the role that spatial can play in collecting and analysing data to inform the Western Australian community, business and government sectors about climate change.

Dr Wills has had a wide-ranging career at different times as researcher, planner, adviser, manager and academic. Ray is a recognised expert in ecology, sustainability, climate change science and the effects of expected future climates on important environmental and socio-economic issues for Australia, and policy formulation including market-based policy responses.

Ray is Chair of the WA Sustainable Energy Association Inc. (WASEA), an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with the School of Earth and Geographical Sciences at the University of Western Australia, as well as the day job as Manager, Sustainability Services, SMEC. Ray is a member of a number of senior policy groups including the WA Government's High Level Stakeholder Group on Greenhouse, the WA Land Information System's (WALIS) Advisory Committee, and several policy committees of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia.

Maurits van der Vlugt, Principal Consultant of NGIS Australia will continue the discussion focusing on sustainable water management and the role that spatial systems and the Internet are playing today and will play in the future.

Maurits is one of Australia’s leading authorities in the design and implementation of (interoperable) spatial data architectures, and web delivery of spatial data. Recent projects that he has been involved in include the design of a common spatial data infrastructure for the whole-of-Victorian Government, the implementation of the NSW Natural Resource Atlas and the design of the National Water Commission’s “Australian Water Resources Information System”, leading the way for an Australia-wide water sensor network.

Maurits has authored several articles on these subjects, including recent articles on “Customising Google Earth” and “Dispelling the Myths around Web Services”, and taught “Customising GIS for the Web” at the University of Redlands (USA).
