Hong Kong – Chief Executive’s address commits to Sustainable Development

NGIS Managing Director, Paul Harris, has recently returned from a visit to Hong Kong and Vietnam.  While in Hong Kong, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Tung Chee-Wah, made his annual address to the people.

A key feature of the address was his commitment to sustainable development in the SAR.  To this end, he is establishing a Council for Sustainable Development, whose role will be to evaluate all new projects to ensure that they do not have a detrimental effect on the environment.

It is just this project that NGIS has been involved with over the past two years, inconjunction with Hong Kong based environmental consultants, ERM.

NGIS has been responsible for the development of a model which assist government officers determine the impact on the environment of new projects.  The model steps the user through a number of key indicators that must be considered and links to relevant data in a GIS.

The model is currently in prototype format and with Tung Chee-Wah’s announcement we expect to see development continue.
