Seagrass Mapping Report Launched

The report was prepared by DA Lord & Associates for a consortium of 10 government and private sector organisations.

NGIS has been working with DA Lord & Associates mapping and analysing the distribution of seagrasses off the coast of Perth. The study, originally commission by Cockburn Cement to cover Owen Anchorage, was extended this year to include all of Cockburn Sound. It identifies the changes in seagrass that have occurred since 1967, when the first aerial photography was available.

The study identified significant gains, as well as losses of seagrass on Success and Parmelia Banks, between 1965 and 1999.  The construction of the Garden Island causeway between 1971 and 1973 appears to have exacerbated seagrass losses in this area.  Since 1981 it appears that the total seagrass area in Cockburn Sound has remained relatively stable.

A copy of the report can be obtained from D A Lord & Associates.
