NGIS' team of oil and gas specialists provided technical expertise in the design and implementation of a GIS that plays a integral role in the protection of conservation values of Barrow Island, whilst carrying out one of Australia’s largest petroleum operations. Barrow Island is 56 kilometres offshore from Western Australia and home to many native plants, mammals, birds and reptiles.
The implementation of this GIS system has enabled ChevronTexaco to monitor critical information about land use, environment and habitat to help minimise the impact of exploration, drilling, seismic operations, production pipeline laying and infrastructure on the island's environment and heritage, as well as monitor rehabilitation.
The GIS can be used to layer information from aerial photography, vegetation maps, animal breeding areas and existing infrastructure to help identify optimum drilling locations and create buffering zones around sensitive habitat.
NGIS built ChevronTexaco’s GIS in an ESRI software environment. The system includes a corporate GIS/SDE solution, GDA 94 and datum conversion, pipeline route optimization and pipeline leakage risk, emergency response manuals, infrastructure planning and environmental sensitivity analysis.
NGIS Managing Director, Paul Farrell said, 'NGIS is extremely proud to be associated with ChevronTexaco. They are a shining example of a company that truly cares for the environment they operate in.'
