WA Main Roads - Road Management System

NGIS was contracted to develop and provide ongoing support and maintenance of a GIS based road information system used by the WA Main Roads Department and over 120 municipalities around Australia.

Project overview

NGIS oversaw the development and implementation of Roman - a Road Management System that  provides asset valuation and inventory data on each local authority's road network. This integration with a GIS has enabled local government management to visualise their road network, improving productivity by making road-network data more easily accessible. It has also improved data integrity of their road network, especially when combined with overview imagery.

The main technologies used to develop this application were Visual Basic 6.0, Map Objects and MS Access as the RDBMS.

The project presented a number of challenges, including:

  • Developing a GIS “viewing and query” tool to integrate seamlessly with the current text based road management software
  • Converting the Main Roads textual data from a central RDBMS into spatial shapefiles
  • Rendering of live maps representing Main Roads data stored in a RDBMS, which is constantly updated
  • Importing of external spatial data and imagery to improve analysis capabilities
