Chevron Awarded for Environmental Excellence

NGIS worked closely with Chevron to create a GIS that has contributed toward the Barrow Island oil field operation, winning the Health, Safety and Environment: Sustainable Development category at the 2002 World Oil 'Next Generation' Awards.

NGIS' team of oil and gas specialists provided technical expertise in the design and implementation of a GIS that plays an integral role in the protection of conservation values on Barrow Island, while carrying out one of Australia's largest petroleum operations. Barrow Island is 56km offshore from Western Australia and home to many native plants, mammals, birds and reptiles.

The implementation of this GIS system has enabled Chevron to monitor critical information about land use, environment and habitat to help minimise the impact of exploration, drilling, seismic operations, production pipeline laying and infrastructure on the island's environment and heritage, as well as monitor rehabilitation.

The GIS can be used to layer information from aerial photography, vegetation maps, animal breeding areas and existing infrastructure to help identify optimum drilling locations and create buffering zones around sensitive habitats.

NGIS built Chevron's GIS in an ESRI software environment. The system includes a corporate GIS/SDE solution, GDA 94 and datum conversion, pipeline route optimisation and pipeline leakage risk, emergency response manuals, infrastructure planning and environmental sensitivity analysis.

NGIS Managing Director Paul Farrell said, "NGIS is extremely proud to be associated with Chevron. They are a shining example of a company that truly cares for the environment they operate in."
