Rottnest Island: Spatial technology is the ticket for effective management and conservation

The Challenge

The RIA required a cost-effective system to modernise the everyday management of the popular island incorporating sustainability measures to help safeguard its environmental and cultural heritage.

Project Background

Island employees need to access and update a number of management information systems ranging from accommodation unit locations and registered boat moorings, to records of indigenous sites and geological areas at risk.

The RIA also possessed a wealth of spatial information and recognised it lacked a platform to adequately manage, share and connect day-to-day activities across the island to provide for its long-term future.

NGIS’ Solution

NGIS worked closely with the RIA to tailor a holistic solution. This began with the development of a central information platform capable of optimising a smart mix of spatial technologies to connect multiple sites for information to be viewed, recorded, edited and stored by employees anywhere on the island, at any time.

The ‘fit-for-the-purpose’ complete package used the latest desktop, mobile and web-mapping systems and incorporated OpenSource desktop software for fl exibility and economy, and mobile GIS software to capture information in the field.

At a Glance

The complete NGIS solution for Rottnest included:
  • Hardware and software selection
  • Implementation and confi guration
  • Full training for all products and key staff
  • Policies & Guidelines for data management
  • Ongoing onsite support

“NGIS staff were always available for assistance and the work was undertaken in a professional manner – most of all, the project was on time, on budget and successful.” Roland Mau Manager Terrestrial & Marine Reserve, Rottnest Island Authority.

The spatial engine GeoSamba Universal® was selected as the preferred software to deliver map-based information to RIA staff through the intranet because of its unrivalled value and unique ability to integrate web-mapping and GIS data with business processes.

In addition, the OpenSource desktop GIS, MapWindow®, was recommended because of its ease of use and rich functionality, and to reduce capital and ongoing costs. The NGIS spatial solution was also forecast to deliver savings of more than 60 per cent over the following fi ve years.

“A core strength at NGIS is our ability to help identify, assess and forecast the needs of an organisation in order to deliver the most appropriate spatial solution on time and within budget,” said Paul Farrell, NGIS Executive Director.

The NGIS solution for the RIA also included customised training and ongoing guidance and support across a software portfolio that comprised GeoSamba Universal®, ArcGIS® Desktop, MapWindow® and ArcPad® Mobile GIS.

  • Management information accessible anywhere, at any time on the island.
  • Time saving for information collection, manipulation and dissemination.
