With one of Australia's largest client bases, Australia Post needed an intelligent business solution that would help ensure it continues to deliver excellent service to even the most remote destinations.
Australia Post's challenge
Australia Post has the largest address list in Australia, totalling more than 9.6 million addresses.
This address list, spread across such a large land mass, poses a number of challenges for Australia Post - and any tool that can assist Australia Post plot the location of these addresses and verify any discrepancies is of great value.
Australia Post has also faced a number of challenges typical of a growing, national organisation, such as how to manage and make accessible to staff around the country, the large amount of geographical data held in a variety of formats in multiple databases.
The NGIS solution
NGIS worked closely with Australia Post to gain a thorough understanding of its needs and identified GeoSamba for ArcIMS (GeoSamba) as the perfect solution.
GeoSamba is an open, service oriented web-mapping business application that delivers location intelligence across Australia Post's entire network of shop fronts, delivery and administration centres.
GeoSamba's web-interface makes it accessible from any web-enabled machine. The ultra-thin interface, free of plug-ins, guarantees high performance over the thinnest of bandwidths - an important consideration given the connectivity issues of some of Australia Post's more remote outlets.
GeoSamba facilitated access to Australia Post's multiple data sources with the ability to display this information visually on-screen, a critical requirement given Australia Post uses a variety of information sources to verify address information.
Being an open source application, GeoSamba allows Australia Post users to link new data sources ‘on-the-fly' without the need to import data into a GIS, increasing productivity by removing the reliance on each state's GIS team.
GeoSamba's flexible tasking engine allows users to define multi-step executable tasks and automate them in a task wizard, ensuring a consistency in work processes around the country.
Outcomes
Australia Post's WA GIS team is now showcasing GeoSamba to staff via Oz Browser, Australia Post's intranet. Oz Browser provides Australia Post staff with key business information, including office locations, services and locality information.
The implementation of GeoSamba has been highly successful for Australia Post, greatly increasing the level of shared knowledge across the entire organisation.
